History of Assos

Assos is a fascinating place where nature and history intertwine. Assos is unique throughout all four seasons... With its unspoiled natural landscape and pristine air, it is ideal for those seeking silence and serenity.

It is also captivating with its historical texture and distinctive architecture. Traces of Greek construction are still visible in the village houses.

The ancient city, with its structures reminiscent of medieval architecture, is also remarkable. With its sparkling sea, Assos is a city full of legends. From 1000 BC onwards, there was significant migration from the Aegean islands to this region.

Aristotle, one of the most important philosophers of the past, lived in this region and established a school of philosophy between 347-344 BC. First the Mytileneans, then the Persians, followed by the Romans, Byzantines, and finally the Ottomans ruled the Assos region, which has a rich history bearing the architectural, cultural and structural characteristics of all these civilizations.

The Temple of Athena was built on the highest hill of the Acropolis in 530 BC. Looking from the top of this temple towards the sea, one can see the Agoras, a small Temple on the west side of the Agora, the Bouleuterion on the east side, and the Bath, Ancient Amphitheatre and Gymnasium to the south. The village of Behramkale, built at the foot of this temple, is a natural wonder with medieval architecture that enchants visitors.

The Hudavendigar Mosque, built in the 14th century during the reign of Murad I among the ruins of Assos on a high hill, is one of our countless historical beauties with its magnificent structure. The Behramkale Village Bridge, also built in the 14th century, adds a special atmosphere to the region with its unique architecture made from local stones over Tuzla Stream. Since we cannot finish counting the historical sites and features of this region, we invite you to Assos...
